چکیده

Fifty-five successful experiments were performed on mongrel dogs weighing from 5 to 20 Kg. The procedure consists in the rapid intracarotid infusion toward the brain of physiologic saline solution, amounting to 2.3 times the estimated blood volume. This quantity is injected in three successive doses amounting to S5 per cent, SO per cent, and 65 per cent of the blood volume at intervals of 10 minutes and 5 minutes. Seven minutes after the end of the last infusion, the animal is sacrificed and the lungs are removed. I'lvaluation of edema is based on gross appearance of the lungs and detection of foam in the trachea upon squeezing the lungs, or on the cut surface of the lungs. Moreover, the lung/body ratio was recorded in all cases. The average lung/body ratio of normal dogs in the cool months is 0.86; it may reach 1.1 to 1.2 after large infusions.*

Upfront triple combination therapy-induced pulmonary edema in a case of pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with Sjogren's syndrome

Clinical efficacy of combination therapy using vasodilators for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is well established. However, information on its safety are limited. We experienced a case of primary Sjogren's syndrome associated with PAH where the patient developed pulmonary edema immediately after the introduction of upfront triple combination therapy. Although the combination therapy suc...

Acute Pulmonary Edema Following Administration of Magnesium Sulfate in a Pregnant Patient

Acute pulmonary edema affects 0.08% to 1.5% of women during pregnancy and during the postpartum period, and preeclampsia/eclampsia is a major obstetric cause of acute pulmonary edema. We present a case of a 23-year-old nulliparous woman who was referred to our tertiary medical center for preterm labor and dyspnea. The patient complained of having suddenly developed respiratory distress and a de...

Beta-adrenergic agonist therapy accelerates the resolution of hydrostatic pulmonary edema in sheep and rats.

To determine whether beta-adrenergic agonist therapy increases alveolar liquid clearance during the resolution phase of hydrostatic pulmonary edema, we studied alveolar and lung liquid clearance in two animal models of hydrostatic pulmonary edema. Hydrostatic pulmonary edema was induced in sheep by acutely elevating left atrial pressure to 25 cmH(2)O and instilling 6 ml/kg body wt isotonic 5% a...

Brainstem edema caused by traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula: A case report and review of the literature.

Brainstem edema caused by traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula (TCCF) is rare, and there is little information available regarding its clinical characteristics. The present report describes the case of a 51-year-old man with TCCF, who presented with right exophthalmos and intracranial bruit for 1 week. One month prior to admission at hospital, he fractured the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Digita...

Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain

Background and Objectives: Epinephrine is usually administered in concert with a lipid emulsion during local anesthetic toxicity. However, the timing and role of epinephrine administration in combination with a lipid emulsion remain unclear. Specifically, the temporal association of epinephrine and lipid emulsion administration with related changes in pulmonary vascular pressures that may lead ...
